Aerosol cans are not accepted at material recovery facilities. They are considered dangerous because they can explode under pressure. Metal sorted at material recovery facilities are compressed into cubed bales to be sold. The pressure used to compress the metal into a solid cube can cause aerosol cans to explode and puts workers at risk.
Partially full containers that you know do not contain hazardous chemicals: To empty the can of its non-hazardous contents, discharge outdoors into a deep cardboard box or paper bag, and allow the box or bag to dry before placing in the trash.
All other aerosol containers: Save for a household hazardous waste collection or take to a commercial hazardous waste facility.
