We often get asked why these boxes cannot be recycled. The answer is that the paper used for frozen and refrigerated food boxes has to protect the contents as well as withstand exposure to moisture, which can weaken the package. Therefore, they possess a thin wax-like layer called a “polycoat.” The polycoat is great for creating a stronger box, but it prevents the paper from breaking down during the recycling (pulping) process. These boxes should go in the trash.
