Mattresses and box spring are banned from disposal in MA because they are made up largely of recyclable materials and are too good for the trash! If you are looking for information on what to do with these materials, start your search on your municipality’s website (this Recyclopedia does NOT provide information specific to any one municipality). Municipal collection programs vary, so search your city/town name and  “mattress collection” for best results. If you cannot find the answers you are looking for, call your local board of health or public works department for more information.

Another option is to ask the vendor dropping off your new mattress to take your old mattress back with them.

For mattresses in very good condition, a number of charities will accept them for donation. The Beyond the Bin directory has a few listings for donation outlets, but it is not exhaustive! If you don’t find an outlet in Beyond the Bin, please try an internet search for mattress donation near you.
